Market Cocktails: Lemon Sorbet + Vodka + Prosecco = The Sgroppino

This week’s Market Cocktail has got to be one of our favorites to sip on when the weather is hot and you crave something cool. It is called the Sgroppino, and if there is one cocktail that deserves a little more recognition from craft cocktail bars in the US, it has got to be this one. Its presence in many European bars is practically ubiquitous, no doubt due to its Italian origins, but its seems like once you cross the Atlantic Ocean it slips back into obscurity. Perhaps this is due to the fact that it is a vodka drink & vodka isn’t seen as being "cool enough" for the more sophisticated imbiber.

Another possible reason might be that due to the fact that is a largely unknown drink in most parts of the world, many people mistake it for a dessert cocktail. Which makes complete sense as an assumption, mostly due to the fact that it is blended and is made with lemon sorbet. However, when made correctly the drink takes on a light and frosty slush consistency, rather than that of a thick and chunky milkshake.

While the lemon sorbet as an ingredient, can definitely make one assume that it is going to be cloyingly sweet, when you consider that lemon sorbet is primarily made of lemon juice and sugar, it is almost better to think of it as a frozen sour mix. Although, if you do prefer it to be on the sweet side, feel free to kick up or even double the amount of sorbet. Trust us. No one would blame you. In fact there are plenty of people online who would no doubt agree with you. Now no more chit chat. Its time to pull out the blender and put it to good use.
